Solid plank stair treads are manufactured using solid planks through the thickness of the treads, glued in 3 to 5 sections across the width to prevent cupping over the lifetime of the treads. They are only available as 1-3/4" thick treads.

Butcher block stair treads are made by gluing thick strips of strong hardwoods together to form a surface that can stand up to everyday use. Made from 5/4 or 6/4 lumber. Front and back staves are always solid. Center staves can have 1 or 2 glue joints The top and bottom surface of the tread is edge grain as the staves are turned on edge.

Horizontal stair treads are made of 3 or 4 multiple layers of 1-inch solid wood strips reduce the natural tendency for warping or splitting that single pieces may experience over time. This increases the stability of the treads. Panels are glued up for width (3 to 5 staves).  Face laminated for thickness.
